Six Tricks For Organic Herb Garden – Garden Herbs

Six Tricks For Organic Herb Garden – Garden Herbs

Herbs have been around since time immemorial and served different kinds of purposes. They have been used to treat illness and flavor cooking; they were even believed to have magical powers.  Do you want to have your own herb garden?  Here are a few ideas on how to establish an herb garden.

Plan your garden. Organic gardening is the way of growing vegetables and fruits with the use of things only found in nature.

Why would one want to indulge in organic gardening?

1. One can easily make compost from garden and kitchen waste. Though this is a bit more time-consuming than buying prepared chemical pesticides and fertilizers, it certainly helps to put garbage to good use and so saves the environment.

2. Organic farming does not use chemicals that may have an adverse affect on your health. This is especially important when growing vegetables. Chemical companies tell us that the chemicals we use are safe if used according to direction, but research shows that even tiny amounts of poisons absorbed through the skin can cause such things as cancer, especially in children.

On the average, a child ingests four to five times more cancer-causing pesticides from foods than an adult. This can lead to various diseases later on in the child’s life. With organic gardening, these incidents are lessened.

Remember, pesticides contain toxins that have only one purpose – to kill living things.

3. Less harm to the environment. Poisons are often washed into our waterways, causing death to the native fish and polluting their habitat.

4. Organic farming practices help prevent the loss of topsoil through erosion.

The Soil Conservation Service says that an estimated 30 – 32 billion tons of soil erodes from United States farmlands every year.

4. Cost savings. One does not need to buy costly chemical fertilizers and pesticides with organic gardening. Many organic recipes for the control of pest and disease come straight from the kitchen cupboard. Sometimes other plants can be grown as companions to the main crop. An example of this is the marigold, which helps to repel aphids from vegetables.

Mixing 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap and 1 cup of cooking oil can make a cheap garden pest spray. Put 3 tablespoons of this mixture in 1 quart of water and spray on plants.

Sign up for a newsletter and get a free herb. www.mcshanesnursery.com Have you ever wanted to have delicious herbs and fruit fresh off the plant? Well it’s easier than you think! Steve shows us how edible gardening is easy and extremely beneficial in this Nursery Note. Hello Steve McShane from McShane’s Nursery. Did you know that herbs are one of the longest cultivated plants on the planet for human consumption. That’s right, thousands of years. Herbs are fantastic, during this segment we’re going to talk more about edible gardening. Fruit trees, vegetables and herbs. Let’s start with the herbs right away. Some key things I can say about growing great herbs: build your soil. I studied soil science at Cal Poly for 5 years and that’s one thing I learned and it’s one thing I’m passionate about. Get a good soil builder like this gold rush right here that’s got a good balance of chicken manure, organic compost, well blended and well composted. Once you get that in your soil a few additives would help as well. This alfalfa meal is a great source of organic nitrogen. That does a lot for soil microbiology. As well, Kelp meal, the same type of idea. If you feed your soil, your soil will feed your plant. Once you get these in the ground, a good starter fertiilzer is a good idea as well. I always like to recommend the granular type though you could also use sachets that can be thrown into the soil, like these. Once you get your soil built and ready for action, then you’re ready to

How To Fertilize Your Vegetable Garden

How To Fertilize Your Vegetable Garden

Fertilizer is an important part of a container garden but you really need to know what kind of fertilizer.

You have to be careful not to use multiple fertilizers and give to much to the plant as this can be damaging. This is easy to do when you are growing in a small pot. It can be a good idea to simply use one of the sticks that you put in the soil and let it grow.

Always make sure you read the directions ofr the fertilizers you’re using in your garden. In most cases, they will say how often they should be applied.

There are 3 components to fertilizer: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. It is important to look up the appropriate mixture ofr your type of plant that you are growing in your containers.

Making sure you have the right fertilizer can be critical to getting the best results with your containers. But it can be just as important to get the best soil ofr the project. You can get soil with all the fertilizer you need in your soil. So you can just go with the soil alone in some cases at least ofr the first season. This can make it easier to start so that you do not have to spend a lot of time learning about the different product out there ofr your plants. It an be confusing so check the label on the soil and start there.

If you want to work organically in your garden then you can look ofr soil that is organic or use soil that includes nothing ofr fertilizer and go with another organic fertilizer.

Improving Garden Soil

Improving Garden Soil

Perfect soil

What is the function of soil in our yards and gardens? Simply put, soil provides plants with mineral nutrients, water and anchorage. The basic types of soil are clay, sand, and silt. The percentage of each determines whether you have sandy clay loam, silt, loam, etc.  There are so many variables that affect soil that your yard may have a different soil type than the one across the street.

Some soil properties that are influenced by the texture of soil include aeration, drainage, water holding capacity and temperature. For example, sandy soil has excellent aeration, warms quickly in spring and has a low water-holding capacity. The exact opposite is true for clay. It has poor aeration, warms slowly, and has high water-holding capacity.

Here are the four major components of soil:

The solid portion, or rocks and minerals Decaying organic matter, microorganisms, living or dead plants and other organic matter Liquid Soil air

Amounts of each of these components determine whether or not plants will grow and thrive in the soil. Ideal or perfect soil consists of 25% air, 25% water, 40% mineral matter and 10% organic matter. As you already know, this never happens!

However, what we do to improve our soil will affect our plants.

You can re-mineralize your soil by adding Minerals Plus or Texas Greensand. You can increase organic matter by adding a good organic compost. This also increases earthworm activity and beneficial bacterial growth.  Spray-N-Grow increases microbial activity that helps keep air and water moving in the soil. To find out more about your soil, use the Sunleaves Three Way Meter.  It allows you to test your soil for pH, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and will give you immediate results.

Naturally, some soil needs more work than others, but with a little work and some good organic garden products, you can pretend that your soil is perfect! All of the gardening products listed in this article can be purchased from Spray-N-Grow.

I am a gardener who enjoys growing vegetables, herbs and flowers. I believe in using organic methods and products when gardening.

Vegetable Gardens Put The Family In Touch With Nature

Vegetable Gardens Put The Family In Touch With Nature

Vegetables straight from your own garden – or terrace containers – are likely to taste better than any other source.

The convenience, cost savings, and the connection to nature are equally compelling reasons to do it, even if you only have a small space. Nurturing a vegetable patch together as a family can also be fun, rewarding, and vigorous exercise. To do it with ease, here’s a handy little checklist from Scotts Canada, a leader in this field:

• Plan: Choose an area that gets at least six hours of full sunlight daily with a source of water nearby. The soil must have good drainage too, so consider building a raised bed, or opt for a few terrace pots first for the experience.

• Prepare: Clear the area by removing grass, rocks, or other debris. Loosen the soil and with a tiller and work in a minimum of 5 to 8 centimetres of soil. A good choice is Miracle-Gro Garden Soil Plus . This plantfood enriched gardening soil helps support strong root growth, holds nutrients, improves drainage, and promotes beneficial micro–organism activity to produce healthier plant growth with an abundant harvest.

• Plant: Timing is everything. Broccoli, carrots, lettuce, peas, and spinach like cooler weather so they can be planted after the last frost. Warm-weather vegetables like corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers should be planted in late May.

• Prevent Weeds: To keep them out, add a layer of mulch around the plants. A popular choice for maintaining its colour is Nature Scapes Mulch.

• Feed and Water: At the seedling stage, your plants should be kept moist and when watering, aim at the base of the plant. Add nutrition with products like All-Purpose Organic Plant Food in the Miracle-Gro line. With your garden hose, you can also feed and water at the same time with LiquaFeed.

• Nurture and Care: You may be surprised how quickly vegetables develop. Most grow from a tiny transplant to a full harvest in 30 to 90 days. Because of this check it regularly for water, pest control—and for the picking!
