You may be wondering when you go to the grocery store what the difference is between conventionally grown and organically grown products. It comes down to the way that these products are created from the time the soil is getting ready for them. In order to get the food to grow, conventional foods are sprayed with chemicals to enhance that growth process. Organic foods are helped along by the use of natural fertilizers. There are many types of animals and insects out there that like to feed on the foods being grown. To reduce this conventional foods get sprayed with pesticides. They also allow birds to come in and to feed on certain things.

Weeds can become a huge problem when such foods are being grown. They have to be destroyed so that they don’t take vitamins and nutrients from the soil that the foods need to grow properly. Conventional methods allow the use of herbicides which are chemicals to kill them. With organically grown food this is avoided. Instead the location for the crops is rotated so that the soil is able to stay healthy. They also will remove the weeds with a machine or by hand.

It may surprise you to learn that not all organic foods are grown in the ground. This meaning can also pertain to types of animals that are regularly consumed. With conventional methods of raising them on farms and ranches these animals receive forms of medication to prevent diseases. They are also given hormones to help them grow faster.

With organically grown animals those methods are avoided. Instead they are fed only organic forms of feed so that they are healthy as they can be. Their housing is carefully cleaned too so that there is less of a chance of any kind of disease spreading out there. They animals are closely monitored in their environment to make sure they don’t get assess to things that they shouldn’t eat or that could make them sick.

Many people will tell you that they don’t taste much of a difference between conventionally and organically grown fruits and vegetables. However, they love the fact that they are feeding their family what is best for them. They also enjoy the fact that they are doing something positive for the environment. Many people will tell you that they can taste a difference with organically grown meat though and it is much better.

One significant difference you will notice is that conventionally grown products are less expensive than those which are organically grown. Most consumers don’t mind paying extra for something that is better for them and for the environment though. You can discover which foods are organically grown due to the sticker on them that says they have successfully met the USDA requirements though.

Now that you have the right information you can feel good about the decisions that you make. Educating yourself about such information is important so that you know exactly what you are paying for and why. It really comes down to a personal choice about what you want to have for your family. Some people really would prefer to buy organic products but due to the economy right now they are struggling just to buy what they can that is conventionally grown.

Gardening organic is the only way to be sure you are growing fruits and vegetables in the way nature intended them to be grown. As such, your body is better able to digest the foods and you are less likely to become ill from the foods you consume. In addition, you can ensure you receive the full nutritional benefits from the foods.

By adding chemicals to crops, some of the nutrients are destroyed. Furthermore, the soil is depleted of nutrients for future crops, which further reduces the nutritional value of the crops that are to be grown. Therefore, by choosing organic gardening, you receive the fullest nutritional benefit from the foods you grow and consume.

While it’s a lot a more time consuming method of farming, the results are far superior to other forms of gardening when it comes to your health. Therefore, it is in your best interest to choose organic if growing your own crops and to support the farmers who choose this method by purchasing foods from the supermarket that have been organically grown.

Growing organic fruit in your garden has advantages over the fruit purchased in grocery stores. Organic fruit tastes better and you know that the fruit was not sprayed with any dangerous chemicals. The fruit that is planted in your garden was chosen by you because of its particular variety and you wanted to grow them organically.  

Many of the plants that you plant in your garden are annuals, producing flowers or fruit only once, all in the same year that they were planted. A vast majority of fruit trees will not produce any fruit until the third year or later after planting. Once they start producing fruit they will continue every year, some years better than others, for generations. Some organic dwarf fruit trees that are container grown will produce fruit 1 to 2 seasons ahead of the earth grown trees.

Even if your yard is a small one you can still grow a fruit tree. Fruit trees produce blossoms in spring and it will enrich the soil around it. Your yard size determines the variety of fruit tree that is best for growing. Semi dwarf and dwarf fruit trees are best types for container growing. Fruit trees will not only need sunlight but they need protection from the wind. In order for fruit trees to bare fruit they need to be pollinated. Some of them are self-pollinating, some need pairs planted, and others must have three of a kind in order to be pollinated. Your local nursery will let you know which varieties are which

The soil preparation is the same as for any organic garden. You can enrich the soil with any store bought organic compost or you can use your own compost. When selecting organic gardening fruit trees always visit a nursery in order to examine it before purchasing. There will potted trees to choose from and also bare-root trees. Areas in the garden that have deep soil that is rich in organic nutrients and minerals are the best places for planting any organic fruit tree. Organic pear trees and organic apple trees prefer a soil that is slightly acidic which is found in the coastal areas of the United States; the stone varieties such as organic plum trees and organic cherry trees would rather have a mild alkalinity as in the inland soils. Poorly drained soils that are damp will not handle fruit bearing trees very well.   

A young tree that is potted will probably adapt faster to a new environment than a tree that has been potted for a long time. Once that young tree has adapted and is healthy it will most likely bare fruit quicker than an older one, even though it may take years to produce fruit. A bare-root tree is less expensive to purchase and is sturdier than the potted tree; planting either type works fine for organic growing.  

You can train a tree to grow into any shape or style. You can train it to grow diagonally along a fence, or just have it grow wild.  Young trees will need to be staked for support after they have been planted; this procedure will keep the stem sturdy and help it to grow straight.

Pruning your fruit tree helps to train it in the direction you wish to have it grow and will encourage it to produce fruit. If you do not like to prune, the least amount that should be done is to take off any branches that are crossing each other. To grow a fruit tree horizontally, use chicken wire along the fence and carefully tie the branches with garden tape to the wire. If you plant native plants and grasses around fruit trees you may be able to avoid harmful pests. The bees are an important part of pollination for your fruit trees; entice the bees by planting flowers or lavender bushes near the trees. The more insects your garden attracts a healthier production of fruit will be yours.

Organic Vegetable Gardening for Beginners

To be successful at organic vegetable gardening you must draw up detailed plans. The soil is your first consideration; how to make it rich and fertile, and how to prepare it so harmful pests won’t attack your vegetable garden. The two ways that organic vegetable gardening differs from conventional gardens is the usage of fertilizer and how to keep pests under control. Phosphorous, nitrogen and potassium are the three components essential to your organic garden.

For lush, green foliage you must have nitrogen. For strong roots and stems phosphorus is needed. And for the important protection from disease and brief cold snaps, potassium is a must. Let’s call them the big three. The big three are available in commercial fertilizers however they are synthetic. In organic vegetable gardening the big three are added in a much different way.

The best way of enriching your soil is by compost. Dig some pits in your back yard to start your compost from kitchen refuse. Use things like pine needles, corn stalks, leaves, carrot tops, fruits or vegetables that have spoiled, manure, egg shells and coffee grinds. Some organic gardeners use weeds in their compost but I do not recommend this for obvious reasons. As the compost materials decompose they release bacteria and fungi into the soil that you are preparing. The bacteria and fungi convert nutrients like nitrogen to ammonia and nitrates that will be usable for your vegetables. Use substances such as seaweed, potash salts, tobacco stems and wood ash to help make potassium in your compost. By making your own compost, you are controlling the mixture and balance to achieve the right combination for your organic vegetable garden.

To be absolutely sure that your compost has completely broken down and is now offering up the right balance, start working it into the soil at least two weeks before you plan on planting.

The pH in the soil must be right for healthy plants. Test your soil, if it has a ph of 0 it is very acidic, while a 14 is extreme alkaline. Of course a seven indicates neutral soil. To raise the pH of the soil inexpensively use ground limestone. An additional benefit of the limestone is that it contains magnesium something that most soils lack. If, on the other hand, you have extreme alkaline soil use sulpher to bring the pH down.

Pest control in organic vegetable gardening is also different that conventional gardening. In many conventional beds gardeners wish to eradicate all pests with pesticides. Many in organic gardening only wish to keep the pest population down so to have a balance in the garden. Obviously, whenever possible, plant pest resistant vegetables. In order for harmful organisms to grow, they need bright sunlight so keep thick mulch around the plants to deny the organisms that needed sunlight and to help hold moisture into the ground. If you find you have a heavy infestation here is a natural pest control formula:

In a jar, combine 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake vigorously. In an empty spray bottle, combine 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1 cup water. Use at ten-day intervals (or more often if needed) to rid plants of whiteflies, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests.
