Rydal Community Vegetable Garden is a small, voluntary scheme set up in the original walled garden of Rydal Hall, in the English Lake District. The garden had been disused and overgrown for many years. In 2005 work began to clear it, landscape it, and return the garden to productivity. The idea has been to create a working vegetable garden, which is maintained by volunteers, who in return benefit from sharing ideas and harvesting seasonal, local, organic produce. This has created an additional feature amongst Rydal Hall’s own, recently restored gardens, which can be visited by all as a place to see, learn and relax. The Vegetable Garden has a small Visitors Centre, accessible paths and information signs. It is organised into roughly defined areas. These include a large, traditional Greenhouse and a Poly-tunnel, which are used to establish younger plants and also house warmth loving species including Vines, Figs and Tomatoes. There is an Orchard with many lesser-known varieties of tree, which is also where the Chickens and Bee Hives are found. There is a Sensory Garden at the top end of the hill, which is planted with Herbs and has seating and views across the whole garden and out to the hills beyond. And the rest of the garden is a terraced mixture of Fruit, Vegetables and Flowers, including Strawberries, Pears, Beans, Courgettes, Potatoes, Lettuce and many, many more. These films are a monthly journey through both the progress made and the changes seen in the garden, the …

Using A Compost For Your Organic Garden Fertilizer
Maintaining an organic garden can be hard for some, but with the proper knowledge and tools life really can go smoothly. You just need to consistently apply the correct techniques. One such technique is to use compost as your organic garden fertilizer, rather than using a product from a bag at the store.
Using a compost helps the soil regain nutrients, which will support the growth of plants. Many gardeners have switched to this method because it provides the soil with vitamins and minerals, making it a healthy place to grow vegetables. This happens most often when the compost is made up of organic food table scraps, and manure from organically fed livestock. Having this pile of compost creates heat down in the soil, which aids in the breakdown of the compost and the release of the nutrients.
This is also a safer method to use, rather than chemicals. One reason why it is safe to use an organic fertilizer is because when a member of the family, or even if your pet comes inside the garden, they will not be in contact with any chemicals that may harm them. Of course, we do not want our pets coming in. But what if this happens? What if a deer or another animal comes by for a quick meal, and they are able to get through your garden fence? We would not want to hurt a deer or rabbit with the chemicals that we have used on our plants.
Another great quality of an organic garden fertilizer, such as compost, is the ability to add more without hurting the plants. As your plants continue to grow, you can apply extra without being concerned about giving too much. This is a concern you would have if you were applying a chemical based fertilizer.

Benefits of Using Organic Garden Fertilizer
Organic garden fertilizer is probably as old as creation itself. This is because long before the synthetic fertilizers were invented, plants mainly depended on organic matter for their succor. However, the modern generation is gradually re-awakening to their benefits after being exposed to the caustic effects of synthetic fertilizers, which are hazardous to human life and environment.
With due importance being accorded to human health and ecosystems, the future undoubtedly belongs to organic fertilizers. This is because they are safer, highly beneficial, much cheaper and easy to procure. Besides, they give much more outstanding and lasting results as compared to their synthetic counterparts.
The organic fertilizer is a must have for any domestic garden as it employs natural materials, which are beneficial for the growth of plants and does not produce any ill-effects on human health. As a result, it is readily available at all stores where gardening supplies of organic nature are sold.
Apart from this it is also easily available through compost material including household and kitchen wastes that decompose organically and animal droppings. Conversely, synthetic fertilizers are much more hazardous as far as human health and environment are concerned as they comprise harmful chemicals that initially boost the growth of plants but can prove to be detrimental in the long run.
Coming into contact with them even accidentally could prove to be fatal for a human being. Sometimes these could also result in debilitating a person for life. Repeated use of synthetic fertilizers often divests the soil of essential nutrients, while also adversely affecting the environment. However, this is not the case with organic fertilizers.
They are mild on the human and plant health but at the same time wholesome and beneficial when it comes to growing plants with their help. Organic fertilizers help the soil regain its lost strength and prepare it for gardening by replenishing it with vital nutrients. Being insoluble, they nourish the plants gradually and do not cause leaching as in the case of their caustic counterparts.
Plant dressings, as organic seaweed fertilizer, do for the plant what vitamins and minerals do for a human body. Considering the myriad benefits, it is advisable to switch to using organic garden fertilizer if you want your plants, veggies and your family to be healthy.
