Eating Organic is Important

Eating Organic is Important

Having a diet high in fruits and vegetables is very important for optimal health, there’s no denying that. The question is; are all fruits and vegetables created equal? More specifically are non-organic products equal to their organic counterparts? The answer is no. But what is lacking in these non-organic foods that makes them an inferior food source?  What are the benefits to eating organically grown foods?

Obviously choosing any fresh fruits and vegetables over prepackaged processed foods will result in a diet higher in the vitamins and minerals that are so crucial to a healthy life, there is now denying that, but you’re still missing out and in a big way. The truth is not only are you getting less of the health benefit as typically advertised by food manufacturers, but you’re also getting more than you bargained for…and not in a good way!

As with most any successful business, profit is the driving force behind its existence, and the produce companies that supply your local grocery stores are no exception. So in order to make more you have to sell more, to more people. And in order to sell more you have to produce more, but how do you do that? This is accomplished with scientifically engineered fertilizers meant to replenish the soil for more frequent harvesting. The problem is the driving force behind these fertilizers is profit (more crops), and not what’s best for the land. This constant depletion of key nutrients from the soil leads to an inferior crop, which is more susceptible to disease. So how is this rectified? By heavily spraying these crops with pesticides. Unfortunately this is not healthy for the person eating it.

Only it doesn’t stop there. In order to get the crops to the masses they must be harvested prematurely which means they’re not getting all of the nutrients from the plant as they should. So how then do you sell an under ripened inferior product? You spray them with dyes and waxes to make them look desirable to the consumer; once again not healthy for the person eating them.

You wouldn’t knowingly buy green oranges, green “red delicious” apples, or any other significantly under ripened food, but the truth is you probably are. Most of the oranges, apples, peppers, tomatoes, and other heavily sprayed produce that fill the shelves at your local grocery store are an under developed over engineered version of what nature intended. So when you’re standing in the produce aisle trying to decide what to buy, do the healthy thing and buy organic when possible.

Important Information About Organic Food Farming You Need To Know

Important Information About Organic Food Farming You Need To Know

In the case of non-organic livestock farming, it is normal for antibiotics to be used for preventing diseases and promoting the growth of livestock, unlike organic food farming. Generally, animals are bigger due to the regular injection of antibiotics. Although certain nations like UK discourage farmers from injecting antibiotics in animals for growth promotion but the practice is very much common in such places. Organic food farming uses antibiotics for treating animal illnesses only. It promotes good husbandry and animal stocking levels as a means of preventing possible animal diseases.

With regular antibiotic injection for animals, there is a high possibility of a high residue of antibiotics in non-organic animal meat. This residue would be transferred to the person who consumes the meat. As you may know, antibiotics have strong side effects in terms of health. In other words, people who consume non-organic meat may suffer from serious illnesses at a much later stage in their lives.

Apart from this, certain bacteria and germs in animals could develop full immunity towards the aforementioned antibiotics. Therefore, if a person suffers due to any of this bacteria or germs, it would not be possible to use certain antibiotics for curing the disease or illness. Other than that, some research and studies show good evidence that organic food contains more Vitamin C, minerals and polyphenols in comparison to non-organic food.

Due to the lack of pesticides and other chemicals usage, it is very much understandable. In the case of non-organic farming, it is usual for non-organic farmers to use pesticides for keeping away insects and other pests. However, pesticides are chemical based compounds, which can cause health side effects. Due to their vulnerability in physical terms, children may suffer more health problems compared to adults. Apart from pesticides, artificial preservatives and sweeteners are normally used for non-organic food farming as well. This type of additives give side effects to health, more so as time goes on.

However, organic food farming focuses on natural growth and does not use chemical additives. In other words, organic food is a better choice for health compared to non-organic food, especially for young growing children. Although there have been some studies and research of the benefits of organic food but more intensive research and concrete proof is needed. With such evidence, perhaps, more people may opt for a healthier choice and help to save the environment at the same time.

Build your own organic vegetable farm not only will save your time and money to travel to market for grocery, but in the same time the health benefits you gain from organic vegetables are numerous. Home grown vegetables are more fresh and rich in nutrients than those that come from large farms that use pesticides and other chemicals to maintain the crop. Freshly grown vegetables are also preservative free, unlike canned vegetables from the grocery store. Try it now with just a few simple steps and start getting all the freshness and nutrients from YOUR organic food farming.

Soil – Why Soil Is Important For Your Organic Garden

Soil – Why Soil Is Important For Your Organic Garden

When you think about soil, often we think of the black earth that we dig up when we stick a shovel into the ground. If it is good, it is typically dark and robust with some kind of animal life crawling through it. It may also be very moist and have an almost earthy smell to it with a saline content. Some may be dry, light-colored, the kind that you would see in a dry area near your household or in areas that have not gotten rained for many weeks or months. Whether or not you are working soils with clay, many rocks, or that you have mixed yourself that has a good mixture of compost, it is quite possibly one of the most important ingredients to a successful organic garden. Here are a few tips on how you can improve your soil so that your organic plants can grow quickly and easily.

The first step you should adhere to is not using any kind of soil that is hard or compacted. This kind has no moisture, may be full of rocks and excessive salt contaminants that may hinder the growth of your organic garden. Your best choice is to either purchase a premium batch of garden dirt that you can use to grow your garden with. You should also add some sort of organic fertilizer whether it is an organic compost or some compost that you have made your self if you happen to have a worm farm that is handy. If you have decided to grow your organic food in a small area such as a small container that you can fit into any room that you have such as a pots or a planter, this may be your best choice especially if you are new to organic gardening or gardening in general so that you can get a feel for how the soil should look and feel to the touch.

Another important aspect of soil is to make sure that the plants that you have are planted are in a mixture that is balanced properly. This means that the dirt needs to have a consistency that is not too wet or dry. Some that is oversaturated may create a situation that will grow fungal infections more rapidly and perhaps even cause rotting to the root system of the plants you are growing. Proper irrigation if in a pot or planter can be made by placing holes at the bottom so that excess water can drain out and stagnate, creating an even worse problem. Likewise, plants that are not watered enough will simply not grow, wither and die. As with humans, we all need water in a balanced amount that will keep us hydrated and healthy as we go through our day and plants are no different.

Organic gardening consists of many different types of plants, most of which are found in your common grocery store. The only difference is that you are growing without chemicals or pesticides that will potentially be harmful to you and anyone else eating the plants as well as cause growth problems with the vegetables that you are growing. Common choices for many indoor or outdoor organic growers are lettuce, eggplants, and even many types of beans. Strawberries are also a favorite if you are a fruit lover. Make sure to maintain the pH balance of your soil as well depending upon the types of vegetables that you are growing in your organic garden.

Last but not least, the greatest soil in the world will not help your plants survive if you do not have the proper amounts of heat or light while they are growing. He that is the most important factor to consider because as it is exposed to more heat, it will dry up more quickly, and the plants themselves will use water more quickly due to the increased temperature. Watching out for the right levels of humidity are also important regarding the hydration of the plants in the composting material that they are growing in.

Soil, that we take for granted every day that we walk upon as we go to the store, to the park, and as we mow the grass around our homes, when growing an organic garden, it is a top item on your list when looking to succeed a growing organically based foods. Take the time to make sure that your pH levels, compost mixture, and moisture content is all at the optimal levels you for you plant one seed into your potential organic garden and you will be well on your way to success and healthier food in no time at all.
