MARCH 2007 Rydal Community Vegetable Garden

Rydal Community Vegetable Garden is a small, voluntary scheme set up in the original walled garden of Rydal Hall, in the English Lake District. The garden had been disused and overgrown for many years. In 2005 work began to clear it, landscape it, and return the garden to productivity. The idea has been to create a working vegetable garden, which is maintained by volunteers, who in return benefit from sharing ideas and harvesting seasonal, local, organic produce. This has created an additional feature amongst Rydal Hall’s own, recently restored gardens, which can be visited by all as a place to see, learn and relax. The Vegetable Garden has a small Visitors Centre, accessible paths and information signs. It is organised into roughly defined areas. These include a large, traditional Greenhouse and a Poly-tunnel, which are used to establish younger plants and also house warmth loving species including Vines, Figs and Tomatoes. There is an Orchard with many lesser-known varieties of tree, which is also where the Chickens and Bee Hives are found. There is a Sensory Garden at the top end of the hill, which is planted with Herbs and has seating and views across the whole garden and out to the hills beyond. And the rest of the garden is a terraced mixture of Fruit, Vegetables and Flowers, including Strawberries, Pears, Beans, Courgettes, Potatoes, Lettuce and many, many more. Think of planting as painting – you need to prepare your canvas before you paint all those colors. If you are not sure how to go about vegetable garden soil preparation, you can search for references on this topic through the internet. There are also lots of guides available out there that can help you know more about proper soil preparation for vegetable gardens.

Preparing the soil starts with clearing the soil properly. You need to get rid of all the debris that can possibly hamper the growth of your plants. Generally, anything more than 2 to 3 inches in diameter can significantly affect the growth of sods. You also need to ensure that if your garden has slopes, they must be gentle or mild. You also need to fill in all low lying areas with healthy soil.

You will then need to spray the area with non-selective herbicide and leave it as it is for a few days. By then, you can already start tilling the area to a depth of at least two inches. This can help much in controlling perennial weeds and in loosening the subsoil. After the initial tilling, you can already start fertilizing and watering the soil.

There are a few other steps involved in vegetable garden soil preparation and it would really be a big help to learn more about them. Keep in mind that if you want to have healthy plants, everything must start with a healthy soil. As they say, beauty is in the blades but the action is in the roots.
